Food is distrib- uted on a first come, first serve basis to individuals who meet the income guidelines. With the onset of winter, schools are always left with the decision to close or delay in inclement weather. The past few winters have been mild, so we have been very fortunate. This winter is a different story! Pioneer schools have already missed a total of 7 days due to inclement weather and loss of heat. You may ask how is the decision made to close school or delay? Board policy at Pioneer Re- gional School Corporation states that "Superintendent may close schools, delay opening of school, or dismiss school early when such alterations in the regular session is required for the protection of the health and safety of students and staff members. He will prepare administrative guidelines for the proper and timely notification of concemed persons in the event of an emergency closing of schools". On days when there is a ques- tion of the safety for the students, Dale Calloway, Bus Barn Supervi- sor, goes out at 4:00 a.m. to asses the road 'conditions. He goes to typical problem spots first to asses their condition. He then consults with other schools in the county and with the county highway de- partment to assist with the deci- sion. He then confers with Dr. Bess, Superintendent of Pioneer Schools, who makes the ultimate decision. Mr. Calloway has been with Pioneer School Corporation for 33 years, so has many years of experience under his belt. Mr. Calloway says sometimes you al- most feel as if "George" has to make the decision.
